Times of economic set back have encouraged vacation ideas and travel with the family to be more meaningful and inexpensive. Try camping. Pack up the fishing poles. Dig up some bait. Load the cooler with ice, drinks, and snacks. Dust of the tent and sleeping bags. Buy a new camping stove, in the event of rain and the twigs will not start a fire. Find the Swiss Army knife. Easy access to the water source for boating, swimming, fishing and anything else that most campers like to engage themselves in. There may be a community bathroom or an in-house bathroom facility.

Lastly, the way to camp that involves very little nature. In an all the way furnished cabin or lodge or timeshare condominium. Central air conditioning and heating accent the elaborate bathroom and comfortable bedding. While the deck usually looks out onto the beautiful lake, this camper may not get any closer. The campfire is built in the small fireplace and the marshmallows are roasted on the end of a metal skewer for the s'mores and camp songs.

It does not matter how a family or person chooses to camp. It only matters that there is fun, laughs, and unity. This happens out in nature, away from the regular everyday hustle and bustle of scheduled obligations. Nature is still there in the middle of this technological based life of electronics and cell phones. Go and find it. Experience it. There will be no regrets except the one of not getting out and going on a camping trip sooner. The experience may take a little imagination and adventure, but it is well worth it.

Initial strategy to have a price which beats the market level can definitely help you in getting into the market. But overall perception of a product or service carries more weightage. The overall perception is an important factor when it comes to deciding about the orders. Some of the business, I know have been offering dirt cheap prices for their services paying little attention to the quality and delivery attributes.

After initially penetrating the market and booking large orders, organization comes to a stage where planning and operations become important. At this stage in an organization's life focus shifts to nitty gritty of handling day to day operations. It is at this stage that the organization starts evaluating the prices being offered at different stages. Cost of inputs and operations, starts weighing on the management's mind. Pricing is normally done on cost plus basis initially it is only after you have established yourself in the market that you start assessing yourself with Value based pricing. Value based pricing is normally done for products or services which have been there in the market for quite sometime and have established themselves. One you have established brand, customer is willing to pay the price more than the cost plus price levels that you may have contemplated, in past. A customer is willing to pay you more for your product provided they are saving money at some other place. One of the examples which come to my mind is that a customer would prefer to visit local service provider for repairing of air conditioner than spending time going to a far away centralized place which may waste his time and other resources. In such a situation the local service provider can definitely go for increasing prices over and above the actual cost plus estimates. Customer will not get offended if organization starts charging more here.

Warning triggers:

Beware of these triggers. You may have underpriced your product or service. Be on lookout for these signs.

Your periodic financial performance starts showing a dip. These could be because of so many factors like overall slowdown in the economy, increased competition etc but one need to have their antennas in position for sensing any of the warning signs.
Sudden spurt in number of enquiries being received at your end. It may so happen that although you because of you pricing lower than the value it is offering, customers are flocking to your counters. It is here only that you take a call whether you can start charging more or would like to scale up your facilities. Handling such situation is always a tricky proposition.
Always be on alert. Increase in prices needs to be well timed.

Survival Skills: Firemaking in Snow, Part 1

PART 1 of 5: A complete series of videos by Nutnfancy and my friend chronicling firemaking in cold and snowy conditions using backpacking equipment only. The series shows the scenery, adventure, survival philosophy, gear observations, our standard joking around, and the good times with long time friend BuggetNuster (YouTube name) and Allie the Mountain Dog. We hiked into the snowy and cold Rocky Mountain bivouac location I had chosen earlier for my Wilderness Lean-To series of videos. A few shelter mods are discussed and shown but the focus of these vids is the making of the fire. I used few edits in the video making because I needed to demonstrate the work needed to create a sustainable fire in these conditions. I have found no shortcuts in the wood preparation for wilderness fire making. Several blades including the Ontario RTAK II, Ontario RAT-7, and KaBar Heavy Bowie are used to strip limbs and baton the logs into burnable pieces with the advantageous sharp edges. They performed exceptionally well in the outing and withstood some real tough use in 15ºF cold (shown of course!). The Sawvivor backpack saw again proved its worth as an accurate and indispensable wood cutter, lubricated with frequent sprays of WD-40. Fire tender used this time was Trioxane solid fuel cake and REI Stormproof matches. The resulting fire was quite manly and heated the Lean-To to incredible levels. When training with your makiwara, not only is it important to build up the strength in your fist, but you also need to learn to put your whole body behind a punch. The makiwara can be a great tool for this as well. Not to be confused with just pushing someone, using your body weight to enhance a punch can mean the difference between hitting someone hard and completely knocking them off their feet.

When you use your makiwara at home, practice sliding your back foot up slightly at the moment of contact. Your feet should not be stationary duing your training, because a huge portion of the power from each punch actually comes from your feet. By driving that back foot forward just a few inches at the exact moment of the strike, you can draw from a huge amount of power that the arm alone can't generate.

This is a great technique for all fighters, but it really levels the playing field for smaller people. You can easily take down a bigger opponent if you learn to use the power in your entire body when punching. This sliding motion of the feet take all of the mass of the whole body and channels it up the legs, through the torso and shoulders and out through the end of your fist. Your front foot slides just an inch, a fraction of a second before the punch, and your back foot comes up and does the heavy hitting.

Remember, when you are practicing this technique on your makiwara, make sure that you are not just pushing the striking post forward. You will still punch it just as hard, but then the back foot drives your fist up, through the target just that little bit more, causing much more damage to the striking point. So if you don't have access to Balsa or Basswood then give white or red cedar a try, I'm sure you will like the results.

I like to use my scroll saw for the rough in of the crankbait before I get into the carving and shaping out the details. Now using a scroll saw may take a little more finesse then a small band saw, so if you have a bandsaw then use that, I don't so I use my trusty scroll saw. The trick is to draw on the wooden blank the lures profile both side and top profiles so that when you cut the rough shape out with either your band saw or scroll saw you have a real blocky looking crankbait.

From this stage how to carve fishing lures can take a couple different directions. Some like to hand carve out the rough shape into something more refined, others like to use wood rasps and the like to achieve the same thing. For me it depends on my wood choice if I'm using the easier to carve woods like Balsa and basswood, I'll whip out my swiss army knife and whittle out my block rough crankbait into a more refined shape. If I'm using cedar then I might use a combination of rasps and knife work in my tackle making process. Either way the idea is to round off the edges and start to bring the crankbait alive.

The Wilhelm Tell Express originates in Lucerne and ferries its passengers to the foot of the Gotthard pass via Lake Lucerne and then continues by rail into Ticino, south of the Alpine ridge. The "cherry road" leads from Lucerne through the landscape of cheery trees.

Lausanne is perched elegantly above Lake Geneva and has been home to the International Olympic Committee since 1915. The museum here displays a colorful history of the games complete with a century of ceremonial torches and medals. The evolution of sports equipment is evident here containing Carl Lewis' track shoes and Sonia Henie's ice skates.

Lausanne's city centre spans several hilltops, linked by bridges spanning deep, river less gorges. Place St. Francois dominates the hilltop district known as the Bourg, formerly the wealthiest part of the city and still known for its upscale markets and boutiques. To the north the hill of The Old Town, crowned by the Cathedral, dominates the city. Expansion during the nineteenth century broadened the city scope to the east and west. The pedestrian walking zone lies north of the train station and provides great entertainment for shoppers and locals alike.

The waterfront area is the happy domain of commoners, office workers and roller skaters. The locals nicknamed their town the San Francisco of Switzerland for all its hills as it seems to be a trek each direction.

What Was Life Like For a Military Family in Naples, Italy?

Prior to traveling to Italy our daughter, who was around 10 years old, twisted her ankle and had to be on crutches during the trip. When we arrived in Naples, my wife thought it would be best if we had her and my daughter spend some time in Germany with her parents. Travel to Germany was by train and we had quite an adventure. My daughter's ability to get around was greatly restricted because of her being on crutches. After we got on the train I left our luggage in the car we boarded and then searched for seats for my family. A few cars later we did find seats but never went back to move the many pieces of luggage. It was not until about half way through the trip that we stopped near the Swiss boarder. We seemed to be in the station for quite a while and I happened to look out the window and saw our luggage setting on the boarding platform. The end of the train was gone and they had removed our luggage and placed it on the platform. I quickly retrieved the luggage and we continued the trip.

I returned to Naples by myself and began the search for housing. The local Navy housing office had Italian contacts that would act on our behalf and find us a place to live. I choose the Lucrino area. This area was located about 10 miles north of Naples and, although I did not know it at the time, was the Italian summer resort area. I rented the 2nd story of an Italian villa right on the sea front. I am sorry to say I cannot remember the name of the Italian who helped us find the villa and also helped with our moving in. He helped us obtain and install a transformer on the incoming electric lines to change half of the circuits in the house from 220 to 110 volts. This helped us with our electrical appliances. He also did all the interfacing with the landlord and helped us very much. The Navy provides for the shipment of household goods and a car when a military member is assigned overseas. We knew we would not be moving into government quarters in Italy while we were still in Key West.

The one major appliance we felt we should take with us was a refrigerator. My wife and I went shopping in Key West and bought a very large used refrigerator. It was quite a sight to see one Italian with the refrigerator strapped to his back bring the refrigerator up the stairs. The only problem was that when he set it down he damaged the motor. The moving company took the refrigerator to get it fixed and we ended up getting a new 220 volt motor. All in all it turned out very well and the refrigerator was a good item for resale when we left Italy. The Navy also allowed us to order a living room couch and chairs from Sears and paid to have it shipped to Italy. I feel that the military always provided excellent support to our overseas assignments. Our life in Italy was very good. We could shop for groceries in the military commissary and the local Italian markets also provided good food. We even had an Italian come by every day with fresh fruit and vegetables. Our villa was very comfortable and we only had the landlord living downstairs a few times a year. The driving conditions were good most of the year but during the summer months it became quite hectic.

There were also about 10 other military families in the area so social life was also very good. The fact that my wife was able to visit her family at least once a year was also very nice. Our car, a Dodge Royal Lancer, was not up to driving back and forth to Germany. I was able to sell it and buy a used Cadillac from a military officer that was retiring in Italy. I got it for a good price as he could not afford to keep it and have to pay the taxes on the car to the Italian Government. Now when we traveled the trip was very comfortable. The only problem I had with the Cadillac was one day my wife had driven it and parked on the street outside the medical clinic. An Italian driver managed to run into the back of the Cadillac and the rear pointed plastic break light cover drove itself through his fender. No damage to the Cadillac! While I was stationed in Italy I became involved with the Intelligence service. This meant that my future assignments would be with a core of a few individuals instead of the regular Navy. I remember submitted a letter to my new assignment section requesting my next duty assignment be in either Northeast or Northwest United States. My letter was returned to me with Seattle, Washington written on it. No other comments. When my orders did arrive, I was assigned to the Naval Investigative Office in Seattle, Washington. Duty in the great Northwest! That will be the subject of my next article.
